Getting Started with KiCad for Hobby Projects

// A practical guide to designing your first PCB with KiCad, from schematic to fabrication files.

electronics pcb tutorial

Why KiCad?

KiCad is free, open-source, and genuinely capable of professional-grade PCB design. After trying Eagle and EasyEDA, I settled on KiCad for all my hobby projects.

The Workflow

  1. Schematic capture - Draw your circuit, assign footprints
  2. PCB layout - Place components, route traces
  3. Design rule check - Catch errors before fabrication
  4. Generate Gerbers - Export manufacturing files
  5. Order boards - Upload to JLCPCB, OSH Park, or PCBWay

Tips for Beginners

  • Start with a simple project (breakout board or LED driver)
  • Use the built-in footprint libraries before making custom ones
  • Run DRC frequently, not just at the end
  • Add mounting holes and fiducials from the start
  • Keep your ground planes solid

Resources

  • KiCad official documentation
  • DigiKey’s KiCad tutorial series
  • r/KiCad community for feedback on designs

The learning curve is real, but after 2-3 projects it becomes second nature. Your future self will thank you for learning proper PCB design.
